Title: "Same Old Backbeat Rhythm"
Edition: 1/1
Collection: As The Wheel Turns
License: Extended Editorial
Resolution: 5304 × 7952
Opening on June of 2012, the Seattle Great Wheel is a 175ft ferris wheel that sits on Pier 57 of the Seattle waterfront. During weekends, holidays, and special occasions the wheel lights up the skyline with magical light shows displaying an array of festive colors and patterns. After being featured on local Seattle news broadcasts, I have been affectionally given the nickname "Wheel King". Photographing the wheel brings me happiness and solace - two emotions that I hope are invoked in you while viewing this collection.
During lockdown, while everything was closed down, the wheel was still lit up. Since it wasn't moving, I experimented a little and went for a faster exposure "freezing" the action. The lights in the shape of a heart made me think of a beating heart, a rhythmic beating, and - being a piano player - the light from the sky further back in the image gave me a feeling of a backbeat - a strong accent on a normally unaccented beat in a bar of music.
