Opening on June of 2012, the Seattle Great Wheel is a 175ft ferris wheel that sits on Pier 57 of the Seattle waterfront. During weekends, holidays, and special occasions the wheel lights up the skyline with magical light shows displaying an array of festive colors and patterns. After being featured on local Seattle news broadcasts, I have been affectionally given the nickname "Wheel King". Photographing the wheel brings me happiness and solace - two emotions that I hope are invoked in you while viewing this collection.
Halloween is my favorite holiday and one of my favorite times to photograph the wheel. Usually, the light show is a fittingly themed pumpkin face. I wanted something different than my usual "head on shot" and knew the lens ball could help create a different, moody composition to honor Halloween. I have found that best time to shoot the wheel is sunset to the end of blue hour - the time after sunset when everything is bathed in blues and purples that can usually last for twenty minutes. That evening, sunset exploded in array of pinks and reds, but I disregarded. I only had a short window as sometimes the colors fade and night comes quickly and it would be too dark to get the shot I wanted, and then I would have to wait another year.
