Title: "Heart Is Still Beating"
Edition: 1/1
Collection: As The Wheel Turns
License: Extended Editorial
Resolution: 5304 × 7952
Opening on June of 2012, the Seattle Great Wheel is a 175ft ferris wheel that sits on Pier 57 of the Seattle waterfront. During weekends, holidays, and special occasions the wheel lights up the skyline with magical light shows displaying an array of festive colors and patterns. After being featured on local Seattle news broadcasts, I have been affectionally given the nickname "Wheel King". Photographing the wheel brings me happiness and solace - two emotions that I hope are invoked in you while viewing this collection.
In the beginning of pandemic, while we were in lockdown, the wheel and all stores and restaurants on the waterfront we all closed down. I was grateful the wheel was still light. Normally, I shoot the wheel as it is rotating to create a blue in the light patterns. During this time though, the wheel wasn't moving. I decided to try something a little different and used a 10 stop nd filter to shoot a longer exposure. This will smooth out anything moving - like the clouds and water - and helped get the heart light pattern in the wheel to "pop".
