The situation of working from home is presented as a metaphor for my experience as a women of colour in the world of design. When we work from home we are isolated, and at a distance from our peers. Sometimes we may feel disadvantaged yet we can also find a freedom in it - the ability to do as we please or work in new ways.
This piece presents an idyllic work from home situation. The tree of flowers stands for the unique and surprising perspective I feel I can offer my field, a perspective which liberates me from constraints. As a women of colour you become used to working like a chameleon - being prepared to transform your identity and your ideas. This creative outlook benefits me in my work enabling me to dream up creations as personified by this piece.
I wish to portray that I am a lonely yet one-of-a-kind voice in the design space which is ultimately for me an empowerment. In a way I have always 'worked from home' and found opportunities where there didn't appear to be any.
