The 2nd labor of Hercules was to kill Hydra. A nine-headed water monster. Hercules faced Hydra but every time he cut off one head, two more would grow. His nephew help him by holding a torch to the neck before the heads could grow back. They reached the immortal head. Hercules chopped off, buried, and covered it with a big rock.

The hero enters the deep realm of darkness, a succession of tests. The process of transmuting the childish images of our personal past. The monster represent our unconscious abyss. The hero decides to conquer his fear by looking where he never wanted to look. And there, he achieves transformation.

Each head represents a problem we have to face to mastery ourselves: sex, comfort, money, fear, hatred, desire for power, pride, separativeness and cruelty.
