Bàkk is a body of work that explores wrestling culture in Senegal.
Wrestling was traditionally performed by the Serer community, where my mother is from. Today it's a national sport in Senegal and wrestlers are superstars in the country.
'Bàkk' is the opening oratory and dance performance every wrestler delivers before facing their opponent. It is traditionally part of the several rituals preceding combat. Wrestlers boast about themselves eloquently to drum rhythms, much like rappers do today in diss tracks, or WWE wrestlers when they enter the ring. Their performance is punctuated with dance routines that fans can learn. The 'Bàkk' is meant to instil a sense of reverence in the audience and fear in the opponent.
