Hiwatari (fire-walking) is the act of walking barefoot over wood and charcoal that has been set on fire and burned.

As long as it is performed properly, there is no risk of burn injuries. At the fire-walking festival at Takao Yakuoin, a Buddhist temple in Japan, not only Shugenja but also ordinary people can participate in the fire-walking[1]. Although it does not require patience or other peculiar mental abilities, it can be dangerous if done without sufficient knowledge. Even if it is hot, running is dangerous because it increases the contact area between the foot and the charcoal, which in turn causes burns.

火渡り（ひわたり）とは、 火をつけて燃やした薪炭の上を裸足で歩くことである。

適切に執り行われる限り、火傷を負う危険はない。日本の仏教寺院である高尾山薬王院の火渡り祭では、修験者だけでなく一般人も火渡りに参加できる。忍耐力などの特異な精神力は必要とされないが、十分な知識のないままに行うと危険が伴う。また、熱かったとしても走ると足と炭との接触面積が増え逆に火傷するので危険である。
