This piece is based on a painting I drew up in Beijing, where I had travelled to paint a mural. Towards the end of the trip I lost my phone and that resulted in other difficulties and I became quite homesick. This feeling of things unravelling was what I expressed in this work.
The cubes falling and then reassembling represent in a broader context, many of the challenges we can face in life, that there is time for both rising and falling. Things coming apart and then back together again.
The question of what is home is also another one the piece asks, as the truth is home is within us, and since that trip I have learnt better how to be at peace wherever I am.
While I was making this work the Welsh word Hiraeth came to mind. It being to have a longing, yearning, nostalgia and wistfulness for a time that has past. Often it is a past home or place I am missing, an experience we all share at different times.
I chose the Moonlight Sonata by Mozart as the soundtrack, as it is a sentimental piece for me. One my mother played a lot during my childhood, so it adds another layer of depth to the emotional journey this work takes me on. Even without this description I think the piece will resonate on some level with many viewers, as it takes you into a meditative space with its pace and flow. Thank you to everyone who collects my art and supports me to continue making more work. Please feel free to get in touch and say hi and introduce yourself anytime. Jasmine X
