Rita was a powerful and destructive tropical cyclone that affected the United States and Mexico in September 2005. It was the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, reaching winds of up to 180 miles per hour. Rita caused widespread damage and loss of life as it moved through the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall along the Texas-Louisiana border. The storm caused significant flooding and wind damage in both states, and was especially destructive in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area of Texas.
