Abandoned church, Northeast USA. We visited this church once before, but we had a larger group of people, which can sometimes make it difficult to shoot in smaller spaces. I wasn’t entirely happy with my shots, so a few years later, when we were back in the area, we decided to make a second visit. There were only 3 of us this time, so it would be a lot easier to stay out of each other’s way. The church’s condition had declined very quickly in the span of 4 years; it was not difficult to find an access point at all. There was significantly more water damage and there were areas of the floors that sunk, even when we only partially put our weight on them. In other areas, there were holes in the floor, like someone had been walking and their foot went through. We avoided these areas as much as we could and began to take photos. As we were shooting, the clouds must have parted outside, because the sunlight came tumbling in through the rear windows. We were graced with the perfect conditions to capture some light beams. We spent a couple hours inside the church, experimenting with different techniques to make the light more prominent. Finally, we were finished, and we made our way out to the car. We were stoked; there’s no better feeling than walking out of a spot, knowing you captured something special.
