Inspired by movie star of the 1950s and 60s Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993), whose style is often described as ‘minimalist chic’, pretty much the exact opposite of my style, ironically. This was a sort of sub-series in a period where I was adding hundreds of tiny elements to create a vandalized, anarchic feel to images, also pretty much the opposite of what Audrey’s elegant image ever was. The ‘Modern Girls, Modern Boys’ series is experimental and unconscious; it takes inspiration from happenstance collage such as the accumulation of street bill-posting. The subject, overlaid with clusters of hundreds of millefiori-like fragments from popular culture remains discernible; the random detritus creates a mysterious and slightly disturbing effect.
