Found off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Nantucket is a quaint island colony with an abundance of character and charm.
The island was incorporated in 1695 as a a port for whaling ships headed out to the Atlantic. What was at one point home to 125 whaleboats, is now home to smaller vessels and luxurious yachts. Nantucket has only 10,000 residents for most months, however this number soars in the summertime to as many as 80,000!
When creating this piece, I aimed to tell the visual story of someone arriving to Nantucket; a continuous scene complete with immersive and true-to-life sound. Starting all the way from the harbor, your ferry arrives to the port and the passengers spill out onto cobblestone streets and crushed-shell driveways. You make your way up to the bustling downtown, which is full of quaint art galleries, cafes, and historical cottages. As you go farther inland the church bells ring and the chatter from the seafront fades.
This is the longest piece in the Cinema in the Sky series at 45 seconds, and for good reason. Nantucket is an island that moves at its own speed, and I felt that more time was required to fully convey the experience. As you watch, be sure to note all the small details of the town below to fully appreciate the magic of Nantucket.
