Inspired by ‘The King of Thule’, Pierre Jean Van der Ouderra, 1896.
Pierre Jean van Oudry’s ‘The King of Thule’, a Rococo portrayal of a legendary figure from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem 1774 ‘The Fisher King’, depicts the aged king seated and adorned in gold. The king cradles his golden goblet, symbolizing mortality, the passage of time, and the human condition.
