The Kapok tree. One of the true guardians of the planet. This tree is not only vital to the ecosystem of the Amazon Rainforest but is also vital to us and every living species on this planet. The Amazon has been described as the "planet's lungs" - without it, would we even exist? Would life as we know it currently exist? This majestic tree may look dead and lifeless; free of leaves and the myriad of species each tree supports through a symbiotic relationship. And yet even in the absence of life, this tree still represents, to me at least, hope. Renewal. A chance at rebirth. If we protect this tree, we protect ourselves and give ourselves a further chance at life. And for me, like the Kapok Tree, I also have a further chance at life. My own chance of renewal and rebirth after a difficult and frightening battle with cancer. Like this tree, I refuse to give in easily to the forces of death and destruction. Like this tree, I am determined to flourish, thrive and truly feel what it is to be alive.

Life is beautiful and precious. We must cherish every second we have. And we must protect everything that sustains life on this planet. We owe it not only to future generations, but to ourselves.
