Artist: Yulia Denisyuk

Edition: 1/1

Collection: Solitary Journeys

About the image: “Wherever you are, whatever you do, keep walking toward the light.” In my darkest, most difficult moments on the path of becoming a travel photographer and writer, I’ve kept repeating this phrase over and over again. Saying it gave me hope that better times are ahead and that the journey does get easier. I was in Guatemala one winter documenting the work of a social enterprise. Finding a moment of stillness one day amid a hectic schedule, I went to the shores of Lake Atitlán in Panajachel to witness the sunset. The lake was completely deserted, unusually so for this hour, except for one tiny boat out in the distance bravely making the journey towards the light.

Location: Guatemala

Year: 2019

Image specs: 4269 x 6400

About the collection: Shot across eight countries in the span of six years, the “Solitary Journeys” collection blurs the lines between street photography, documentary photography, travel photography, and art. Every photograph represents a relationship between movement and stillness and explores the transience of human experience, showing moments that may have otherwise gone unnoticed in the hustle of our daily lives.

About the artist: Yulia Denisyuk is an award-winning travel photographer and writer working on assignments with various publications around the world. For past work, she’s shared a roof with nomads in Mongolia and documented Iznik tile artisans in Turkey.

Solitary Journeys collection image

What is life if not a solitary journey from one place to the next? Emotions come and go, people enter and leave our lives – only one actor remains.

This collection blurs the lines between street, documentary, travel photography, and art. Every photograph represents a relationship between movement and stillness. My subjects are either on the verge of transitioning to the next scene or being still in the moment. They are brushstrokes of light passing through life. These frozen moments of time are like still frames from an old movie. Blink and they’ll disappear forever.

With this work, I aim to capture the transience of the human experience. I am asking the viewer to slow down, pay attention, be still enough to look deeply at these images, and see the details I have included in the frame.

This collection of 9 1/1 images was shot across 8 countries in the span of 6 years.
