Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu) are remarkable creatures. Here are some fun facts:

1. Sea turtles can live for over 80 years. They don't reproduce until they are between 25 and 40 years old.

2. Honu grow to around 3-4 feet, but can weigh 300-350 lbs or more!

3. Adult Honu are herbivores that eat seagrasses and algae. Juveniles are omnivores and dine on insects, crustaceans, worms, sea grasses, and more.

4. Human encounters are a serious problem, including entanglement in fishing gear, poaching, plastic ingestion, ocean pollution, and coastal development. Respect and awareness can go a long way in helping the endangered and remarkable Honu.

5. Honu are symbols of strength, endurance, and protection.

This picture was taken in Maui shortly before the devastating 2023 wildfires that destroyed Lahaina and impacted all of West Maui. It will take years to rebuild, and the publicity has already waned.
