The Asiatic Lion.

There is no official coronation (RaajyaBhishek) ceremony held or any samskara performed to declare that Lion is the king of the jungle. He becomes king by his own attributes and heroism ('Parakram').

In the wild, there are two formally recognised lion subspecies. The African lion (Panthera leo leo) is found in Africa, south of the Sahara desert. The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo leo) exists in one small population around Gir Forest National Park in western India, which are around 674 left in the world.

In ancient India, the Simhasan, also known as the Lion Throne, held a significant place. Simhagarjanasana, representing the Roaring Lion Pose, is an ancient practice within Indian yoga. Lions, in various forms, have graced the entrances of royal palaces globally. They appear on pillars, adorn swords, and are meticulously carved into stones. These majestic creatures have functioned as symbols, associated with deities, incorporated into heraldry, featured prominently in literature and epic poems, and meticulously portrayed in exquisite pieces of ancient art.

What makes the lion such an appealing character is that, while it’s possible to lack heart or brains, lacking courage is something most people have dealt with at some point. It makes us empathise with him.

We are beginning to learn that each animal has a life and a place and a role in this world. If we place compassion and care in the middle of all our dealings with the animal world and honor and respect their lives, our attitudes will change. : - Jane Goodall
