In 1579, Yasuke, a man of African origin, arrived in Japan working as the bodyguard of Portuguese traders. It was there he was presented to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga. Nobunaga was so intrigued that he hired Yasuke as his kashin. Yasuke fought alongside Nobunaga until his usurper, Akechi Mitsuhide, forced the seppuku of Oda Nobunaga.
