This artwork depicts the world of vodou from Haiti. The characters in this piece represent the 21 nations in Haitian vodou. Haiti was the world’s first Black Republic and earned its freedom in 1804 when slaves decided to revolt against Napoleon’s powerful French army. However, Haiti is now very socially divided, preventing the country’s unified path forward.
This piece was inspired by Haiti’s African and indigenous Taino cultures that formed Haitian vodou. Each vodou nation represents a group in Haitian society. By unifying them, I hope to inspire all Haitians to unite and build a better future. The deity Minonan is in the center of the art piece levitating and dressed in white. She is the only deity who can gather all 21 vodou nations around the mapou tree—known for housing all 704 deities in Haitian vodou. I made this piece to depict vodou positively, as it has become stigmatized and overshadowed by mainstream media. Finally, I co-produced the music to reflect Haiti’s African root.
The project originated in September 2021 when a group of NFT artists and web3 developers in Venice, California came together in support of a group of Haitian artists who were interested in learning more about NFTs.
Artists include:
OliGart, Yatalley, Thonyloui, Bousiko, Ferlando, King Midas, Timoza, Veridiques, amamakeda, Styves, Taz Spady, JerryXWolf
