The legendary RPW Pepe collection of NFTs were minted on Counterparty (XCP) in 2016-17, long before the barrage of normie NFTs that we see today. Many Counterparty wallets have been lost over the years, thus circulation is far lower than issuance.

Counterparty assets live in the OP_RETURN section of the Bitcoin blockchain and are traded via the XCP Dex - often for PEPECASH or XCP. You see, because this all basically started as a joke in 2016, PEPECASH, for whatever reason, quickly became the defacto trading pair in the Dex. This phenomenon still exists as of 2021.
