The Namecoin Files on-chain PNG represents one of the earliest examples of on-chain image storage. The image is registered as 6 separate nf/ names on Namecoin that when merged together, create a base 64 encoding for a PNG of the Namecoin Files logo.
Namecoin Files was right at the birth of NFTs, without much fame or success. The service was originally designed to store files in perpetuity on the block chain. At the time this was a very controversial idea given the amount of space on the blockchain storing an image took up.
