Can you find all the faces? Haunting ruins like these at Angkor Thom are all that remains of the former capital of Angkor Wat, the great Khmer kingdom that ruled the entire Mekong river basin between the 9th and 13th centuries. At the center of this complex is the Bayon, and the Temple’s most distinctive feature are the 200 plus gigantic, serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. Their enigmatic gazes guard the walls of the city giving one the feeling that they are watching your every step.

Faces of Angkor collection image

I first photographed Angkor Wat in the fall of 1991 on assignment for National Geographic, while following the Mekong River from its source high up on the Tibetan Plateau to its mouth in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. I was the first western photojournalist invited to visit since the retreat of the Khmer Rouge in 1989. The entire complex was under reconstruction by a French team of archaeologists repairing the neglect and damage reeked during the murderous regime of Pol Pot. There were many areas off limits due to the presence of land mines. The only “undamaged” ruins were those of Angkor Thom and the Bayon temple where I concentrated my efforts.

In 2013, I returned to a totally different scene. Inundated with 1000’s of Chinese tourists, it was almost impossible to keep people out of the frame. I chose to work the upper terraces of the complex focusing on the faces of the Bodhisattvas, presented here in this, my latest collection of NFTs.
