In Greek mythology, Gaia and Uranus were the primordial Titans who personified the earth and the sky, respectively. Uranus was the son of Gaia, the earth mother, who was said to have conceived him by herself. Urano married his mother, though their marriage was under some pressure as the primordial gods Chaos and Tartarus were also drawn to Gaia. Still, over time Uranus and Gaia began to have children. First came the Titans, a whole pack of six girls and six boys, who looked human but were much taller and more powerful.

After the birth of the Titans, their marriage became increasingly stormy. Oranus spent a lot of time in heaven and did not visit his wife or help her with the children. Gaia was enraged and both began to argue with each other. As the Titans grew, Ouranos also yelled at them like the terrible father that he was. Uranus despised his children, locking them in their mother's womb, a fact that caused Gaia terrible pain. To free herself, the goddess carved a flint sickle and convinced Cronus to mutilate her father: he threw Uranus's genitals into the sea and from the foam, the beautiful Aphrodite was born. From the blood and semen that fell on the earth, the Erinyes, Melias and Giants arose.
