inspired by the installation of ceramic poppies, ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ that marked the centenary of the First World War at the Tower of London in 2014, i present my own artistic creation, ‘Blood Swept Sands and Streets of Gaza’.
transposing the symbolism of the resilient poppy from the historical battlefields of Flanders to the contemporary, rubble-filled streets of Gaza. in Palestine, the poppy holds profound significance as one of the national flowers, its blooming colors – red, green, black, and white – mirror those of the Palestinian flag. it's often displayed as a sign of solidarity with Palestinians and stands as a symbol of their deep-rooted connection to their land - a land currently being destroyed and poisoned by bombardment.
these poppies echo the unyielding spirit of the Palestinian people, illustrating their enduring connection to a land under siege. the question remains - how contaminated will the soil be when this is all over, will poppies even be able to grow?
yet, this artwork is more than an expression of solidarity; it is a rallying cry for liberation and a conduit for tangible aid. part of a group fundraiser featuring over 70 artists from around the world - Art For Humanity - 100% of the sale of this piece will be donated directly to the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization for relief efforts in Gaza.
the poppies in ‘Blood Swept Sands and Streets of Gaza’ represent both a call for freedom and a small contribution towards helping to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. this work is not merely a testament to the resilience and struggle of Palestinians; it is a global call to action, inviting audiences to engage in a dialogue about freedom, demonstrate solidarity with those fighting for their rights, and contribute to a future where poppies bloom not from the ruins, but from the peaceful fields of Palestine.
by supporting this artwork, you're not just appreciating art; you're contributing to peace, expressing global solidarity, and taking a tiny step toward a liberated, hopeful, and prosperous Palestine
