I've only had the chance to capture the aurora on camera a handful of times in my life. The first was an accidental capture up in the Adirondacks (this was a classic "oops, I didn't shoot in RAW" moment). The second was at a tiny pond in Washington state. Neither of those times, though, was I fortunate enough to see the dancing lights with my own eyes.

Imagine my surprise when I was able to drive mere minutes from my home in upstate New York, capture some lovely dancing lights in a timelapse, and see it with my own eyes as well! It was definitely a paradigm shift in my thinking; all those pretty pictures I saw suddenly made sense to me, now that I had experienced it! The colors aren't as vibrant to the naked eye as they are on camera, but you still get a sense of them (despite what anybody says about rods and cones not being sensitive enough to detect them). It was like waking up from a lucid dream straight into reality!
