Artist Note: When Kurt smiled, it could light up a room, and this is one of the best examples I have of that. It was taken during the cover shoot for The Advocate, the long running US gay and lesbian rights magazine. Kurt did the rare interview at that point in time - he and Courtney were still reeling from the Vanity Fair hit piece six months earlier - and he famously stated that he was “ definitely gay in spirit,“ a sentiment many of us shared in the nascent punk/grunge scene. Being gay could really piss some people off. That was ‘punk’ to us, and to be gay was to be defended and embraced. I wish I could recall what the joke was here, but unfortunately I don’t. The shoot, which started at 11pm, on Kurt’s schedule, was done in the bedroom of a hotel condo at the Pike Place Market where the Cobain family was living at the time, due to the fact that no-one was willing to rent or sell a house to one of the biggest rockstars in the world! Their reputations preceded them - Kurt found it frustrating and unjustified but also ridiculous and hilarious. This is also the only photoshoot I know of with Kurt’s hair dyed black. He really liked it, and asked for my opinion (I did as well). Courtney not so much, so it didn’t last long. Also note the classic Flipper t-shirt, one of Kurt’s signature favorites. As far as I know, this photograph has never been published.
