Somehow I found myself at the premiere of Kanye West’s short film. I have no idea how I ended up there, but that was part of the magic of being in Cannes. The premiere was in a theatre that was right by the sea, and there was a huge flat area where people were gathering before going in. It was so dark that you wouldn’t have known if you were about to walk off the edge, right into the sea. Totally surreal. I loved the way this red carpet was set up in front of total darkness.
2012 Cannes Film Festival – For the first time in the festival’s history, a father and son, my father and brother, had films in competition the same year. The New York Times hired me to shoot a daily diary of the goings on at the festival between the two films, and I was given unprecedented access to places photographers aren’t usually allowed to go.
Un Certain Regard means "a certain glance" and is a section of the festival for films with unusual, non-traditional stories.
