"Arrival in NZ" is an evocative artwork encapsulating a multigenerational story of migration and identity in the context of New Zealand's scenery. Inspired by the early tourism posters of New Zealand, this artwork pays homage to three women: my grandmother, who made the journey from London to New Zealand when my mother was a teenager, and me, born and raised in the land of the long white cloud.

Three women of similar ages, wearing similar timeless dresses stand together in unity. Each figure represents a different chapter in this intergenerational narrative, a tale of resilience, adaptation, and new beginnings. This style of dress, which we all would have worn at some point, evokes memories of eras gone by, serving as a sartorial tribute to the enduring love we share for costume and fashion, inspired by my grandmother’s sense of style, brought over from the UK, and her costume collection, which was the largest in NZ.

Set against New Zealand scenery of mountains, lake and a small settlement, the picturesque backdrop symbolises the natural beauty of NZ. The landscape is a symbol of new beginnings, opportunities and a sense of belonging.

A celestial network of stars delicately overdrawn on the image represent the Southern Cross. These stars are intricately connected by fine lines, serving as a metaphor for the enduring connections between the women and their shared heritage. Just as the Southern Cross guides travellers across the southern skies, these lines convey the deep bonds and enduring love that unite my family across time and space.

"Arrival in NZ" invites viewers to reflect on their own stories of heritage and change, connecting with the universal themes of home, belonging, and the enduring ties that bind us across generations.
