Tensor In Vitro (2022) is an animation series inspired by the process by which it came to life: artificial conception.
Made in collaboration by Cody Samson and Chicago multi-media artists Sophie Sturdevant and Sean Williams, the works in this series were conceived in a digital test-tube, coupling Samson’s generative 3D animation with the stylings of Williams’ and Sturdevant’s vibrant illustrations.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Cody Samson is an audio/visual artist with a focus in experimental video art. Drawing on his background in live music and event production, Samson’s work explores the depths of artificial intelligence, digital audio synthesis, and the interplay with physical space. A Chicago native, Samson currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Chicago-based artist Sophie Sturdevant tells visual stories by playing with lines and layers in a style she calls SuperStacked. In the traditional art world, the woman is often the subject of art but is rarely valued as a credible and innovative creator. She leans into the juxtaposition of her role often in her work, challenging the idea that womanhood is supposed to be lovely, tender, and one-dimensional, but is — in reality — deeply complex, raw, and emotionally overwhelming.

Each piece deals with facets of human reproduction, using illustrative abstractions to bridge the gap between literal and metaphysical.
