Pyongyang, 2017. Three workers waiting for a haircut at the Pyongyang wire and cable factory. The photo shows possible hairstyles. Haircuts are a very sensitive topic in North Korea. It is also the subject of many fantasies and questions from foreign observers: Do both sexes really have fifteen haircut styles approved by the regime? Did Kim Jong-un order the men to copy his hairstyle, limiting growth to a maximum length of two centimeters? Nothing is clear, and in North Korea, if you're not sure, you don't take the risk.

Stephan Gladieu began his career as a war photographer in 1989, criss-crossing through, among other places, Europe, Central Asia, China, India and the Middle East. He likes to bear witness to the human condition through the production of portraits as in his series Hereros, Maï Maï, Homo Detritus and North Korea. The latter project was selected to headline the Rencontres d'Arles in 2021.
