The Calder Question - Season 1

Calder Foundation and TRLab have joined forces with two-time Emmy® Award-winning motion designer Raoul Marks to create 5 limited edition NFT artworks for Season 1 of The Calder Question based on these 5 Calder mobiles:

- Vertical Foliage, 1941

- Eucalyptus, 1940

- Snow Flurry, 1948

- Tines, 1943

- Untitled, 1956

Raoul Marks: "When I look at Vertical Foliage, I’m struck by the delicate gravitational interplay between its elements. It’s almost a universe unto itself. This led to an exploration of what those notions invoke for me. A singular point of light explodes out into a plethora that details the underlying connective structure of Vertical Foliage. We see the mobile in way not seen before. As those forms begin to arc out through space, we start to get a sense of the infinite complexity required to describe all the subtle interactions at play between the elements of the mobile. There are layers upon layers of tugging and pushing as it glides through time and gravity."

Jointly developed by Calder Foundation and TRLab, The Calder Question is the first official NFT experience dedicated to pioneering 20th Century artist Alexander Calder. The experience takes appreciation for fine art to another level: it is an innovative, education-driven digital collecting journey that brings you closer to an artist and their legacy like never before.

The Calder Question will challenge participants’ assumptions about Calder and deepen their understanding of his art, culminating in a singular opportunity to collect limited-edition NFTs created specifically for this partnership. It begins with an orientation to Calder’s life and work that sets the stage for participants to explore four of Calder’s signature art forms in detail: mobiles, early abstractions, figurative wire sculptures, and sound-making works. The Calder Foundation will use the proceeds to establish a new conservation fund for the restoration of Calder sculptures.
