Here's an image of my New York Times magazine dating back to 1962. I've been able to keep this intact within my family for decades. It holds great significance because at the time, whilee Haile Selassie still ruled the Ethiopian Empire, they were deemed by the US as being a country with exponential economic growth ahead.
Fast forward to current day, our economy is indeed growing, but more so due to foreign powers investing in natural resources while the people native to Ethiopia are on a brink of a civil war (the IRONY). From Amhara, to Tigray where an unjust genocide is taking place, to Oromo and all other ethnic groups within the country have had their divisions fueled for the past 30 years. I consider myself an ignorant diaspora because as proud as I am to be a first generation Ethiopian, I've been foolish to think Ethiopians stand as a monolith. I hope to further understand how corruption has seeped so deep into society until the point we are at war with our brothers and sisters.
From an ignorant diaspora, who will no longer remain ignorant.
