Inspired by Antonin Artaud's piece on Van Gogh titled "Man suicided by the society" this series explores portraits of people who have been killed directly/indirectly by society as a whole.
The second piece in this series is of Rohith Vemula, a doctorate graduate from Hyderabad university. His identity as Dalit which was associated with him from the birth, ostracised him in his daily life.
Two weeks before his death, Vemula and four of his friends, all Dalits and associated with a campus political group called the Ambedkar Students Association, had moved out of their hostel rooms after being suspended by the university administration.
The students say they were allowed to attend classes and other academic sessions, but were barred from entering the hostels and common areas in groups and participating in student union elections.
His dreams hung with him in his hostel room one day succumbing to the pressure.
They were not killed by one person or commit suicide, they died succumbing to the present society. Overtime, they are forgotten by the same society. This series is an exploration of the same but this time around, AI DeepDreams into it. With each iteration, DeepDream dwells deep and figures random figurines from their portrait, overtime their identity is wiped away. Just the way they erode from human memory for what they endured and stood for.
