A lonely dirt road cuts through lush grasslands along the San Andreas Fault in California.

Carrizo Plain National Monument is a place untouched by time. One two-lane dirt road cuts through the area, and there are virtually no residents or services. No gas stations, convenience stores, intersections, or street lights. A time capsule that transports visitors to the early 20th century.

I've never felt peace and solitude like I feel visiting this place. Winter rain brings a torrent of new life, in the form of endless fields of grass and flowers, which becomes home to billions of insects. Birds flock to feed on this abundance, and the resulting symphony of sounds is indescribable.
