Winters in the Canadian Mountains can get cold, really cold. Although not as frequently anymore, often it can get down to at least -30 celsius plus the windchill. With that extreme cold can also come immense beauty. Most of my winters are spent adventuring in the mountains with two skis attached to my feet. On this particular day, we were going for a fairly mellow, but long, ski touring day. Pretty quickly my beard and eyelashes had turned white from the frigid air. We ascended higher up the slopes, through the forest, and into the alpine. Aside from the cold, it was a beautiful bluebird day. As we got above the trees I turned to look back at the valley below. In the middle of the valley hung a rainbow pillar sticking straight up into the sky. I’ve seen sun dogs before around the sun, but nothing like this. It’s a rare phenomenon where the sunlight and ice crystals give a prism effect which results in the rainbow pillar seen here. The spectacles nature can produce never cease to amaze me and I’m always ready for the next sensational surprise.

As an international collective, we are excited to be able to bring together images from Greenland, Finland, Russia, Scotland, Antarctica, Switzerland, France, Iceland, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, and Patagonia.

Landscape photographers go to great lengths to reach these magnificent locations in extreme, and sometimes treacherous conditions to capture their grandeur & beauty, and highlighting these efforts was also part of the concept behind the collective.

Finally, in the next few generations, it is expected that some of these regions will cease to exist as they do today, with the cycles of glacial expansion and contraction seemingly disrupted, and greater levels of retreat occurring in a number of areas. If these fragile regions do become unrecognisable from their current state, these images will form an important documentation of their history.
