Westerkerk
The fourth slice in this collection is one of the oldest structures in Amsterdam. The Westerkerk was built between 1621 and 1630 in a renaissance style. The church is located in the Jordaan, which is one of my favorite places to visit when going into the city. I wanted to create an imposing image of the church, an image with a lot of contrasting features. During the day this would have been very difficult, but seeing as how the church is lit up during the night and this creates a contrasting divide against the darker backdrop, I figured this would be the best way. The moon was particularly bright that evening, so I had to use an ND filter to create this shot. Something I hardly ever do when doing long-exposure photography. During that evening it was actually pretty busy on the streets, but the canals themselves were pretty much cleared from boats going up and down. This made for the ultra-smooth water in this shot. It adds to the peaceful vibe and calmness in this shot. It's in the middle of the capital and yet it looks so serene.
As if the city is sleeping.
