As I was walking through the redwood forest, the hot sun from the area inland began to pierce the heavy, cold sea fog and the sun rays formed, beaming across the forest, changing the feeling to a magical and uplifting brightness of hope.

The coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) has long been my favorite tree. This species is included among the tallest trees that exist, reaching up to 379 feet (115.5 m). Walking through a redwood forest feels like you are in a cathedral built by nature. It is awe-inspiring, majestic and serene.

I first visited Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park in July 2009 and witnessed some amazing sunbeams. After visiting the area several times over the years, it wasn't until July 2021 that I saw them again. In the summer of 2022, after several trips to experience this phenomenon, I was finally successful on the 5th visit and these light rays were the best I've ever seen. You need to have the right combination of temperature, fog and position of the sun to make it happen. So if luck and the weather is on your side, you can experience this moment of awe in a stunning setting.
