There were many women in the institutions. In those times, especially under fascism, if a woman did not meet the requirements of the patriarchal system, she was placed in the Manicomio. This included, among other things, being permissive, unwilling to play the role of wife or mother, or daring to rebel against the violence inflicted by her husband at home.

But not only. Poverty or defenselessness at the time could also put a woman at risk of being interned . In fact, those women who did not conform to the morals of the time, often victims of trauma or sexual abuse, ended up in the asylum. Loquacious, euphoric, lascivious, sullen, impertinent, complaisant.... these adjectives have been used to describe the symptoms of women

As I write this, I myself could hardly believe what I wrote here. The thought that we humans once thought like this, makes me afraid that in some minds this thinking has never stopped.
