Vicenzo M. Age 17 Length of stay: 27 years Place: Manicomio Leonardo di Bianchi - Neaples

As a young boy I was once the star of the soccer team. I was good at school too. A typical Italian boy. I often played the big World Cup games on my own on the soccer field. My mom said it wasn't normal and took me to the doctor. The doctor said I have what they call chronic schizophrenia.

He sent me to a manicomio for treatment. Apart from electric shocks, nothing was ever done. At one point they gave me very strong sedatives even though I was calm.

Today 27 years later, I am drooling in my own excrement in this wheelchair and the world around me is like a fog.

This place made me what they wanted me to be. All I ever wanted is to be a soccer star...

MANICOMIO V2 collection image

A photographic journey through the dark history of the forgotten asylums of Italy.

This collection is more than a photographic view of the past. It is a reminder of the forgotten souls of yesteryear and a wake-up call to our society to create more awareness for mental health and to continue to work on destigmatizing mentally ill people. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to a non-profit organization for traumatized people.
