“Summer Breeze” an Abstract Diary that captures the essence of a summer coastal city, where the humid tropical breeze melts into the air. No matter how far away I am, the space where most of my works are completed and the place that occupies the largest image in my perception is Seoul, the city where I was born and raised, so the abstract image of the city I complete always naturally permeates the scent and color of Seoul. Creating this Abstract Diary is my way of recording a day and a fleeting moment, and no amount of detailed words or beautifully written prose can effectively convey the emotions of that day. As a work of art, it is the essence of the moment, and a recording of emotion and space.

는 습한 열대의 바람이 그대로 녹아 있는 여름 해안가의 도시를 기록한 추상 일기이다. 어느 먼 곳에서의 감상을 담았더라도 대부분의 작품이 완성되는 공간, 그리고 나의 인식 속 가장 큰 이미지를 차지하고 있는 장소는 바로 내가 나고 자란 도시, 서울이기에 내가 완성하는 도시의 추상적 이미지에는 언제나 서울의 향과 색이 자연스레 배어난다. 추상 일기는 순간과도 같은 어느 하루를 가장 순간답게 담아내는 나의 기록 방식이다. 그 어떤 자세한 말도, 유려하게 표현한 글도, 추상으로 표현한 이 한 장의 그림보다 나를 그날의 감정 속으로 완전히 빠져들게 하는 것은 없다. 순간의 본질과 가장 닮은 모습으로, 그렇게 또 하루를 기록한다.

Ahyoung Jo (aka Joy Jo) is an artist whose large-scale works delve into the unknown borders of cities, the world, and the universe beyond. To explore the edge between reality and subjectivity, her artistic approach revolves around creating abstract expressions, which attempt to capture these inner worlds and make them visible. Having spent extended periods in London and Germany, Joy Jo’s artistic journey is equally influenced by the cities she has spent time in as the philosophy she has consumed. Among her explorations, Joy Jo’s “Abstract Diary” series stands out as a prominent work. Comprising digital artworks of drawings incorporated into photographs, Joy Jo chronicles the places she has visited and transforms them into impressive cityscapes whose methods and appearances are inseparable from her inner emotions and interpretations of them at the time. In doing so, her “Abstract Diary” series both records and expresses the inner imagery and emotions of herself as well the cities she has been to, transcending the limitations of concrete words and images. The difference between tiny corners and vast chasms are not so different after all. To the human eye, they are both nearly incomprehensible, as is our emotions.

To date, Joy Jo has actively participated in over 5 solo and group exhibitions in South Korea, Australia, the U.K, and Germany.

조이조 작가는 도시와 세계, 나아가 우주의 이면에 숨겨진 본질을 탐구하는 대형 페인팅 작업을 중점적으로 진행해왔습니다. 대상의 내면과 본질을 효과적으로 나타내기 위해 추상적 표현을 택했던 작가의 작업은, 런던과 독일에서의 긴 타지 생활을 통해 실재와 객관의 영역을 다시금 탐색하는 방향으로 발전됩니다. 이러한 작업의 연장선에 있는 작업 중 하나가 ‘추상 일기’ 시리즈입니다. ‘추상 일기’는 조이조 작가가 머물던 도시의 인상적인 장면과 특별한 날의 기억을 담은 사진 위에 드로잉을 더하여 특수한 형태의 디지털 작품으로 완성한 작품입니다. 작가의 시각으로 재해석된 도시의 추상 이미지는 어떠한 구체적인 기록이나 말보다도, 작가가 그날그날 포착한 도시의 감성을 정확하게 기록합니다. 즉, 도시가 가진 내면적 이미지와 그에 대한 작가의 감성을 관객으로 하여금 보다 객관적으로 관찰할 수 있도록 한 작가의 의도가 녹아 있는 작품들입니다.

작가는 국내를 비롯하여 호주, 영국, 독일 등지에서 다섯 번의 개인전과 다수의 단체전에 회화 작가로 참여한 바 있으며, 전통 페인팅과 디지털 페인팅, 오디오 비주얼 미디어, 컬렉팅 등 아트의 경계를 넘나들며 다양한 예술 분야에서 활동 중입니다.
