I remember when I was a young, candy was the size of my fist, and king-sized bars were nearly impossible to hold with both hands. Even now as an adult I can remember the taste, almost as sweet as my memories from back then. With this work, I have created an ice cream cone that will never melt or grow old. The memories of youth, carefree and full of joy, are preserved. The subtitle of this work is ‘Fresh Strawberry, Blueberry, Rainbow Candy Ice cream #52’.

나는 어렸을 때 주먹 크기의 사탕을 기억하고 있습니다. 작은 손으로 쥐기도 힘들었던 큰 왕사탕은 달콤한 추억의 한 부분입니다. 나는 지금 어른이 되어서도 그때의 추억을 회상합니다. 고민없 이 마냥 즐거웠던 그 순간은 누구에게나 있었던 달콤했던 어린 시절을 영원히 녹지 않는 아이스크림으로 재현하였습니다. 이 작품의 부제는 ‘Fresh Strawberry, Blueberry, Rainbow Candy Ice cream #52’ 입니다.

For Minseok Kang (aka KangCar), nothing goes to waste. As a mixed-media artist based in Seoul (Korea), he squeezes every bit he can out of his creative process, even going so far as to save paper trimmings, paint drippings, and canvas clippings for later use. When he has enough, these scraps are then meticulously crafted into ice cream cone sculptures that seem to positively drip with the “leftover” juices of his previous works, namely, cars. Painting vehicles is an obsession of KangCars. As the ultimate consumer product, they are an apt metaphor for exploring the reality of modern urban life. Rendered in shiny acrylic paint, they are instantly covetable, while their frenzied brushstrokes stimulate speed and the allure of danger. Always on the go, always racing past each other, his paintings offer a wild ride into the heart of our own desire to possess, surpass, and flaunt objects as well as each other, no matter the cost. Although KangCar’s ice cream cone series is a direct byproduct of this process, they represent leisure and slow enjoyment, an irony that is not lost on the artist. Rendered and digitized forever into NFT format, KangCar’s ice cream cones will never melt, and remind us to take a second to enjoy the sweetness of life, which won’t last forever. KangCar has exhibited and collaborated on numerous exhibitions, including the 2017 Jeonnam Moto Festival, contributed works for Moto Magazine’s cover issue, MINI Motors, Hyundai Motors and now experiments with NFTs, AR, and metaverse related artistic practices.

강카라 불리는 강민석 작가는 작업 후에 남겨진 아크릴이나 휴지 조각 등을 모아 아이스크림 조각을 만들어 NFT로 발행하는 작가입니다. 잘라낸 아크릴 조각들 위에 휴지나 솜뭉치 원색의 아크릴들을 올려, 형형색색의 아이스크림을 만들어 냅니다. 우연히 아이스크림 작업을 하게 되었지만, 그 근간에는 작가를 대표하는 자동차를 소재로 한 작품세계가 있습니다. 강카 작가는 자동차의 속도와 움직임 그리고 색상을 광택있는 아크릴 물감의 역동적인 조합을 통해, 현대인의 내면의 갈등과 경쟁을 시간과 공간을 초월하는 자동차의 힘과 역동성에 빗대어 표현합니다. 자동자 작품의 남은 조각들로 표현한 아이스크림 조각은, 같은 재료와 아크릴 조각으로 전혀 다른 작품과 작품 세계를 표현한 것입니다. 경쟁과 속도에 지친 도시의 삶에서 형형색색의 녹지 않는 아이스크림은 한 번씩 찾아오는 꿈 같은 휴식과 즐거움을 표현합니다. 도시 풍경에서 시작한 강카 작가의 작품 세계는 도시인의 내면의 갈등을 거쳐 그 파편이 휴식으로 재탄생되는 작품을 통해 도시인의 삶에 관한 다양한 성찰을 하도록 해줍니다. NFT 및 AR과 접목한 작업, 메타버스 등에서도 다양한 실험적인 방법들을 선보이고 있으며 2017 Rock과 함께하는 전남 모토페스티벌, MINI 자동차, 현대 모터스, 모토매거진 커버 작품, 등 다수의 콜라보레이션을 진행하였습니다
