Twilight at Hooker Lake, Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand
Hooker Lake .. the location that took me 9 times to hike to before I saw a reflection and got the shot of my dreams.
Over the last 5 years I have hiked this trail over and over never to be granted the conditions I had hoped for. Until my 9th visit, when the gods were on my side. It was the middle of winter and there was not a breath of wind. As we descended to the lake, I saw it, the reflection! The reflection I had wished for, for years! Not only that, there were icebergs, and stars. Icebergs the size of buildings, Aoraki Mount Cook covered in snow, and the most peaceful evening on record for me at Hooker Lake.
I'll never forget this moment, it makes me smile thinking about it. I'm so glad I was able to document it with my camera.
The Mountains are Calling is the second collection by New Zealand photographer Rach Stewart of 20 single edition images after her first sold out collection Aotearoa Dreaming.
'I have been chasing Aotearoa New Zealand's mountains with my camera for the majority of my career with my signature style long exposure and atmospheric light photography.
Our natural world has such a pull on us as human beings, and many of us identify our souls with certain parts of its creation. To me the mountains are where I feel the most humbled by nature. Mountains lift me, but they scare me. They make me realise as humans we are just mere mortals strolling this earth for a short moment in time.
These images are some of my favourites from all the sunrises, sunsets, hikes and flights I have experienced with the mountains over the past 7 years. I hope you enjoy them too.'
