Monika is the quiet one in the group. But as they say, still waters run deep. Unlock Monika's true depths when you buy this NFT. (Trigger warning on content that includes sexual harassment/violence).
Note: Each of the NFTs in this limited collection comes with special unlockable content in the form of descriptive notes, short stories, or even secrets. No two sisters are alike, but I do have a special love for Monika's story because it was so hard to write. The sisters and their stories are not based on any single individual--and I especially want to make that caveat clear for Monika. Instead, the stories are about the collective experiences of women like me who are South Asian immigrants living in the U.S. & U.K.
The saree sisterhood is a tribute to the hundreds of immigrant women I know with incredible stories, big personalities and bigger hearts. Many of them share with me a common love for nine yards of beautiful handloom fabrics created by regional artisans who are experts at weaving patterns into cloth. In the unlockable content, I've added some secrets that tell the story about each one (the stories are real but to preserve their dignity and respect their privacy, I have mixed up names, locations and details. So what you get is a human story that could belong to any & all of us).
Big shout out to the Hutum School run by husband wife duo Manzoor Elahi to promote art education in rural Bangladesh. I am a huge fan of their work, and proud that they allowed me to use their design as a basis of this series. Check them out & give them some love. https://www.facebook.com/108838697520620/posts/108853130852510/
