Welcome to Portugal, where the Atlantic Ocean crashes against the coast in violent protest, and peaceful countryside hills run into other-worldly views of olive trees with vines snaking through. Dramatic coastal landscapes of rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and the powerful ocean are what you will find when you travel in Portugal.
The ocean calls to all of us and photographers are among those who answer, who capture a fire in the most distant sea. We lift our point and shoots into the sun, with hopes of framing a story worth telling, a story of blue and white and rocky coastlines blended together over smooth sand. We hope that when we return home, we will be able to pull out each memory from its home in our cameras, to marvel again and again at the way the surf mirrors the sky, as if they were one.
It is a celebration of light and water, a visual meditation on the world around us. Water is dancing on the rocks, slowly moving up and down, driven by the tide. Water is soothing, embracing everything it comes in contact with. And then it is gone, leaving nothing but smooth rocks in its wake. Photography invites you to be present in this fleeting moment of time and enjoy every second of it. The poetry of the water, its subtle and calm, but very attractive movement, invites you to have a moment to enjoy yourself, because life is like water: it goes on forever, always changing its rhythm and shape, always moving.
It was actually no wonder that I started taking pictures of everything I see. Staring at the lens, a camera around the neck - I often found myself on imagination voyages where each step would take me to somewhere I've never been. Often I come back from a trip with a few pictures that really move me… with their framing, their color and the way they capture an instant of the day or an aspect of a landscape. This is a collection of such pictures – no technical wonder, just « no wonder » with a capital N.
With this collection, I want to treat your eyes to the majesty and splendor of our natural world. You can traverse the globe, without even getting up from your chair. The pictures of these incredible places remind us why we travel. Whether you explore alone or with family, what matters most is that you take time to reflect on nature’s beauty, celebrate its connections to human culture, and find your purest form of inspiration along the way.
