This was one sign that didn’t make it into the original zine when I first started the series. I’ve held onto this image for about 4 years and have only recently edited it. This sign is standing next to an empty lot in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana. It sits right across the street from an abandoned church. Looking at this sign now makes me very nostalgic. It was one of the signs I would see almost everyday. If I saw it at this angle, then I knew it meant I was leaving the downtown area; heading home.

EMPTY SIGNS collection image

When I first started the Empty Signs project in 2018, I didn’t overthink it; there is an abundance of them where I live, so I decided to make a series. After I had finished, an additional meaning became more clear to me. I feel as if it shows viewers all of the places that once had names. Everything from fast food restaurants, sporting good stores, and hotels are all just forgotten. The signs are giant decaying monuments which shows the crumbling of capitalism in America.
