I was fostering dogs during the time I was studying Science Education at university. It was an amazing experience being able to take car of the dogs in a loving and comfortable home instead of the being confined to the pound.
They would accompany me on my adventures at night as I wasn’t too comfortable on my own at the time when I first begun astrophotography. I used to be scared of the dark but when I am out those thoughts now go away.
On a few occasions I drove hours away intending to photograph the night sky to then only sit in my car too scared to go out on the long walk in the dark by myself. Once I begun bringing a companion with me, I felt more relaxed and my nerves went away.
Ritchie who looks like a dingo joined me on this adventure to photograph the night sky at this beach. Whilst looking for compositions, we discovered the stars reflecting in a sandy pool. The conditions were perfect as it was a still windless night.
Later I would discover this doesn’t happen to often as coastlines are often exposed to the wind disrupting the still bodies of water.
I captured my photographs then continued our late night walk. We would go on many more adventures until he found his forever home with a loving family. He was my last foster dog and when out shooting today I still think back to all the good memories we shared and how much he helped me overcome my fear of the dark.
