On September 1, 2019, after a long drive into Organ Pipe National Monument in southern Arizona, I caught up to this massive severe-warned thunderstorm raging north through the desert. Yet another moment where I had to embrace my tripod to stabilize it and keep it from blowing over from the high winds blowing out of the storm. I stayed just long enough to capture this bolt blasting out of the storm's leading edge. This tall saguaro cactus swayed back and forth in the wind but was undaunted by the storm's ferocity.

un·daunt·ed : Not intimidated or discouraged by difficulty, danger, or disappointment.

In all my years pursuing extreme weather, the difficulty in capturing extraordinary images isn't necessarily left to the inherent risk factors of storm chasing. Avoiding injury or death from lightning, tornados, flooding, these are all known risks to the extreme weather photographer. But professionals understand how to at least mitigate risk by accurate forecasting, and trying to stay one step ahead of the storm. The difference between those who excel and those who quit is determination. For every disappointment, for every mile driven, for every time a camera is destroyed from high winds, there is an extreme weather photographer who persists. They are undaunted in their pursuit for the extraordinary.
