Iceland, the land of fire and Ice. This insanely picturesque country has always had my heart. In the last few years I have found a very special place in my soul for the glaciers, volcanoes, rugged coastline, glacial rivers, waterfalls and overall fascinating geology of Iceland.
This image (fire) was taken at the Fagradalsfjall eruption, Iceland 2021. In March 2021, an unprecedented swarm of more than 30,000 earthquakes shook a corner of southwest Iceland. On March 19, volcanologists reported the world's newest volcano had burst open, marking the first time in 800 years a volcanic eruption occurred on this strip of land.
After a week of little to no activity, we continued to monitor the eruption on our trip. One evening we noticed on the live cameras activity from the Volcano, and made our way on a 5 hour drive from the east to the base. Sleep deprived, exhausted we started the hike to Fagradalsfjall at 3am. After seeing a glimpse of bright orange magma raging in the distance, the excitement continued as we made our way closer. As we arrived, blue hour commenced and the sun rose; I witnessed new earth being created right in front of my eyes.
