Kalya‘s life was connected deeply with the ocean since an early age. She was raised in a ship, sailing to all over the world with her parents, siblings, and relatives on board. They were humble and happy, always helping others wherever they went to. One afternoon they found a man stranded in the ocean and took care of him, this man was called Lucas, and he quickly gained their trust and Kalya’s affection. A week later, she suddenly woke up in the middle of the night with a loud noise. She looked for her family and Lucas but couldn’t find them in their rooms, then when she went to the deck, she saw them kneeling in a row next to strangers holding guns. Before she could do anything, she was hit and dragged to join her family. When she opened her eyes, Lucas was there in front of them, bragging to the other pirates about how easy it was to take over the ship. Then he started to shoot to death each member of Kalya’s family. When it was her turn to join them, he shot her belly saying: “take this secret to the deep ocean, darling” and made his crew throw them into the ocean. As Kalya was drowning in the ocean with no strength to move herself, she didn’t accept her imminent fate, she wanted revenge for her family with all her soul and repeatedly asked in her head for the ocean to concede her this opportunity. When everything started to become too dark, hands pulled her down quickly, then she blacked out. Once she recovered her consciousness, her body changed and she could breathe underwater, she became what humans call a mermaid. Now one with the ocean, she seeks for those who brought suffering to her life. This piece captures the moment Kalya watches her final prey, Lucas, as he drowns; her hauntingly beautiful face fading as his vision blurs and cold water fills his lungs, slowly surrendering his life to the ocean as she watches on with deep, soulless eyes.
