There it was. The roll of film I had saved for almost 20 years. Never developed. An unopened present from my own past, sitting there in a shoe box. I knew what was on it: photos from my first trip to London in 2003, when the arrival of George Bush had evoked the rallying masses, then known as the anti-globalization movement. And I was there, as a student of journalism, to witness one of the most amazing protest marches I had ever seen. It was a life-changing experience for me, an impressionable student aged 22, ready to fight for a better world.
Fast forward to February 2022, when I finally found the time and will to have the film developed. I was nervous. I wasn't sure if all of my photos would be in focus, but that didn't matter. At least I would have footage of the atmosphere, the crowds, the anger, the will to change the world. Or so I thought. Turns out the roll only contained cat photos. The worst cat photos ever made. Of Gizmo, my long dead cat. I wept. For Gizmo. For London.
